Its not too late for some last minute tips COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY - SIPA Admissions Blog

Its not too late for some last minute tips COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY - SIPA Admissions Blog Processing and reading applications gives a whole new perspective on the admissions process.   When you’re going over hundreds of papers in a day it’s hard to understand why people make the same mistakes with their applications over and over.   At the same time it wasn’t that long ago when I was an applicant myself and I remember the pressure, conflicting instructions from different schools and competing advice from friends and colleagues.   If you are finishing up your application for the February 5th deadline, here are some tips and answers to frequently asked question to help the process go more smoothly on your end as well as ours. 1)           We do not need your official score reports from the TOEFL or GRE/GMAT.   There is a place to self-report your scores on the application. Once you have been accepted, we will ask for your official report, but if you have submitted unofficial scores to us there is no need to contact our office to see if we have received a report for ETS. 2)           You must answer the second essay question. We recognize that many schools offer an “additional information” question as an option to address special circumstances that may have affected your grades, scores or professional history. While this is one way to use this question, we really want to get to know all our applicants on a personal level, which is why the question is required. For suggestions on what types of information to include, you can read my earlier blog post here.   3)           We do not have a minimum GRE score or GPA. SIPA is a competitive program so you are encouraged to put your best foot forward in your application. However, there is no floor under which we will not consider your application.   This is because many of our students are several years out of undergrad and have had time to mature or hone skills they may not have had five or ten years ago. The one exception to this is our hard rule of at least a 100 score on the TOEFL (or 7.0 on the IELTS).   As SIPA classes are taught in English there is a minimum level of proficiency necessary to participate and contribute. 4)           We do not consider supplemental materials. While we all admire the family pictures, PhD theses and audio visual aids that are sent into the admissions office every season, we do not consider them as part of your application. We realize that other schools, particularly those in other countries, have differing policies, but please do not waste time producing or shipping these materials on our account. We have thousands of applications to consider and so for the sake of our time as well as fairness to other applicants, we consider all of the required application materials and nothing more. 5)           Do not waste words in your essays. It is hard enough to confine your professional experiences and goals to a 600-word limit, so you need to be strategic about the way you write. Do not waste essay space rehashing information that is available elsewhere in your application, for example your name or the grades you received as an undergraduate. In addition, we want to hear from you, not Gandhi or John F. Kennedy. If you choose to include a quotation in your personal statement make sure that it is necessary and supports your personal story. I can’t wait to read your applications.   Good Luck!

The Best Bad Option Nuclear Deterrence North Korea - Free Essay Example

The United States relations with North Korea have been nothing short of rollercoaster throughout the past decade. To quell the idea of nuclear war, the United States has used a wide variety of tactics to stray away from the severity war presents; including diplomacy, deterrence, and military action. In North Koreas pursuit to military infidelity, they have made clear enemies in the United States and other countries threatened by their up and coming nuclear presence. The United States, especially during the Trump presidency, has seriously considered action towards North Korea and the Kim dynasty on several occasions. Author John Mauk states that the window for United States military action is narrow and needs to be taken advantage of immediately due to the advancement and accuracy of their military technology. On the contrary, many government officials and analysts have suggested that this thesis has been proven false again and again. General Paul Selva the obvious advances in nuclear and ICBM technologies, the threat from North Korea was not imminent as it lacks the capacity to strike the United States with any degree of accuracy or reasonable confidence of success. Other independent analysts including a former Los Alamos National Laboratory director who has visited North Korea on several occasions have concluded that it will take Pyongyang several more years to seriously threaten the U.S. with nuclear-tipped missiles (Bolan). Due to the variety of opinion, but stronger argument towards Koreas missile capacity not being an imminent threat. The cons of military action outweigh the benefits of it for the United States. This is without the recognition of the possible presence of another nuclear superpower, China, if the United States were to attack North Korea. Harvard historian Graham Allison has recently highlighted the risk that a U.S.- China confrontation over North Korea could push both countries toward a Thuciydes Trap leading to the 21st centurys first major power war. Far dangerous, than the original nuclear stalemate. The other leading option for the United States is strengthened deterrence, the action of discouraging an action or event through instilling doubt or fear of the consequences. Throwing away military action as a valid option, we are left with the closest thing to it, deterrence. Without the declaration of military action, we can set boundaries and guidelines using our military and economic superiority as a guideline for cooperation. As Victor Cha states in the conclusion, when facing this conflict you are choosing between a variety of risky strategies. Each strategy faces scrutiny and uncertainty, but deterrence offers a possibly much more effective and safe option by preventing the use of any violence between countries. Although it may not promote peace, we are weighing the bad with the worst. At least while North Koreas technological development is significantly behind the United States, we can use deterrence as the main strategy going forward. This is the best move for the American people and doesnt show the bloodthirsty, uncultured, American people that is constantly mentioned throughout American political history. Trump could use his platform to prevent war for the oncoming years; lets hope American greed doesnt outweigh the cons of another all-out war.

The Lives Of Animals ( 1999 ) - 1060 Words

In The Lives of Animals (1999), a metafictional novella about animal right by the South African novelist J.M. Coetzee, the author posits through his character representative, Elizabeth Costello, that â€Å"animals are not believers in ecology† (Coetzee 151). We are told to believe based on the previous ruminations of Costello, who outlines early in part I â€Å"The Philosophers and the Animals† section that animals do not possess reason, and as a result, animals cannot hope to comprehend the way in which the complex ecosystems that are present in the study of ecology in any meaningful way (Coetzee 137). This claim is important to Costello in that it is the very foundation of everything else she argues within her debate, as she cites that to approach the ethics of the animal rights argument from any spectrum of our understanding of reason is to do so from a flawed point of view, as animals do not possess reason and therefore cannot be judged and evaluated under that syst em fairly, or even at all. While Costello’s claims certainly present an interesting point, they are troubling and ultimately flawed in their approach. I strongly disagree with Costello’s claim that animal are not believers in ecology because she is wholly enamoured with the idea of reason being an impossible judge of animal rights, going so far as to say that if reason is all she shares with her philosophical opponents, then she has no use for it (Coetzee 133). However, through Costello’s assumption that she can speakShow MoreRelatedAnimal Experimentation And The Medical Field Essay1367 Words   |  6 PagesAnimal experimentation has notably advanced the medical field since its beginnings nearly two thousand years ago.
